Breast Augmentation Revision

If you have breast implants to create fuller and more shapely breasts, you will likely need or want a breast augmentation revision as your implants age. Since breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime, breast augmentation revision at our Houston practice can be an excellent option to ensure you enjoy your shape for years to come.

Breast augmentation revision is often more complex than initial breast augmentation surgery. For optimal safety and the best results, it’s important to choose your breast surgeon carefully. In Houston, women considering breast augmentation revision seek out Dr. Camille Cash for her expertise and years of experience with the surgery.

How Long After Breast Augmentation Can I Have a Revision?

If you are unhappy with the results of a recent breast augmentation performed by another surgeon, give yourself at least 6 months to recover from your initial procedure before pursuing a revision. Your breasts will need that time to heal and achieve their full results.

Although breast implants last at least 10 years, you don’t need to replace them unless you are experiencing issues or want a different look. Many women enjoy their breast implants for 20 or more years before choosing to replace them.

What Is the Recovery Process for Breast Augmentation Revision?

Similar to your original breast augmentation, you will experience some bruising and swelling after the procedure. These aftereffects should mostly subside within 2 to 3 weeks. Dr. Cash may prescribe pain medication to minimize any discomfort.

Most patients return to work 1 to 2 weeks after their breast revision surgery, but your experience may vary depending on the extent of your procedure. Make sure to avoid strenuous activities for at least 3 weeks. You should see your full results within a few months.

What Procedures Can I Combine With Breast Augmentation Revision?

A breast lift is commonly combined with breast augmentation revision surgery, especially for those who are replacing very large implants. Breast implants can give you fuller, shapelier breasts but can’t address the breast sagging that occurs over time. If you didn’t opt for a breast lift with your initial breast augmentation, now may be a good time to combine it with your breast augmentation revision surgery.

Other procedures commonly combined with breast augmentation revision include:

Many women combine breast enhancement and body contouring surgery, called a mommy makeover to address the changes from pregnancy, delivery, and breastfeeding.

Are You a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation Revision?

A good candidate for breast augmentation revision is anyone in good health who is dissatisfied with the appearance of their implants or concerned about their implants’ health. Additionally, you’re generally a good candidate if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have realistic expectations about the procedure.
  • You are a nonsmoker.
  • You have time to commit to the recovery period.
  • You are able to follow your plastic surgeon’s pre- and post-surgical instructions.

Common Questions

How common is breast augmentation revision?

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in breast enhancement for your primary breast augmentation is a good way to minimize the need for revision surgery. A 2021 study found that revision rates after primary breast augmentation are as high as 36%. Common reasons include capsular contracture, implant malposition, and sagging due to aging.

Is a breast revision more painful?

The level of discomfort after surgery depends on the specifics of the surgery and individual patient factors. If it is complicated and involves a significant amount of scar tissue, recovery may be more painful than the first surgery. If it is a simple implant exchange, recovery may be easier.

Can I get a revision if I just want to swap out my implants?

Yes. Replacing your implants with a different fill material and/or size is a type of revision surgery called elective implant exchange.

Is breast revision safe?

The surgery is considered safe when performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon such as Dr. Cash, who has specialized expertise in these potentially complex procedures.

What if I want to just remove my implants?

Dr. Cash can perform breast implant removal, technically called explant surgery, to remove your breast implants without replacing them.
