Even though BOTOX® Cosmetic is considered a straightforward, low-maintenance treatment, it’s essential to understand what to do and what NOT to do after BOTOX injections. In this post, I answer common BOTOX aftercare questions to help you maximize your wrinkle-free look.
How long after BOTOX can you lay down?
We recommend you not lie down for at least 4 hours after your BOTOX treatment to prevent the neuromodulator from migrating to surrounding facial areas.
Can you exercise after BOTOX?
Before you exercise, give the product time to settle into the intended areas. We suggest refraining from workouts for at least 24 hours, which also minimizes the risk of bruising.
Can you drink alcohol after BOTOX?
Drinking alcohol after BOTOX can dehydrate you and interfere with healing. Therefore, it’s wise to stay hydrated with water, but say NO to alcohol for 24 to 48 hours after your injections.
Can you fly after BOTOX?
It’s a misperception that airplane cabin pressure negatively affects BOTOX. It’s perfectly safe to travel after BOTOX.
Can you wear makeup after BOTOX?
Sure! However, we suggest waiting at least 30 minutes before applying makeup to allow your injection sites to close. After that, wearing makeup is an excellent way to camouflage any minor bruising or swelling. Just be careful not to press on or rub the injection sites, and use clean hands and a clean makeup brush or sponge to avoid the risk of infection.
Can you go to the beach after your treatment?
Proceed with caution! It’s essential to always protect your skin with sunscreen, especially after a cosmetic procedure like BOTOX that leaves your skin more vulnerable during healing. Protecting your skin from the sun using an SPF of 30 or higher and wearing sunglasses and hats can also prolong your BOTOX results.
What’s the most important rule of BOTOX aftercare?
While you may be on a self-care roll, avoiding a facial after BOTOX is essential. Rubbing or massaging of the injection sites can jeopardize your results by leading to unintended spread. Even a body massage is off-limits. That’s because you can put too much pressure on your face when you press into the “donut” on a massage table, potentially increasing your swelling and prolonging healing.
What to do after BOTOX?
Since we’ve covered the don’ts, let’s touch on a few aftercare best practices.

- Use a gentle skin cleanser
